Was this an excuse for their friends and fans to get together? Or was there a community in their music? Mad Fables was the first Indie band, drawing thousands of people to their self-run events. Many more people say they "saw the band live" than actually exist in the state of New Jersey. (*)
The year is 1975, the hum-drum year. Mad Fables never had a hit, never had a song played on a commercial radio station for that matter. That's where the story begins.
The legacy is their fans. And these are the tales and songs...
No, that title does not refer to the late sixties blues band known for their maniacal lead guitarist, Alvin Lee, but rather it was ten years ago that this site was put together. On June 15, 2000, madfables.com went "live" on a computer under my desk in my home office and Aardvark once again blasted its opening volley to the masses. Well, maybe not masses -- only about six people knew of the site. But through crawling robots that scrape the net for everything, the original Mad Fables web site appeared at the top of search lists when the words Mad Fables were entered. Slowly, people stopped by in their surf memories ("I wonder what ever happened to that guy who danced so funny at the Mad Fables gigs?"). And through a couple of flukes and Racky's video of George Bush in 2005, tens of thousands of unique visitors have come and gone.
The fluke was an mp3 of Ounce of Love which had the snail movie embedded in it and was put on soundclick.com. To promote their free mp3 player which showed flash graphics, they chose the Ounce of Love mp3 as a sample of the player's capabilities. Soundclick users clicked on it, but only a handful actually had their player. So poeple listened and Ounce of Love was number one on their site for two months!
That is a true Mad Fable story and so typical of the big breaks that happened to the music and the band. So, now, we sit back and wait for the next weird, overlooked oddity in the Mad Fable family to rear up and cause a modest sensation. See you in 2020!

(*) - For the record, this is not true and is totally fabricated, but it sounds pretty sweet. The largest crowd was 12000 at Kutztown Festival.
