Mad Fables was the first Indie band, drawing thousands of people to their self-run events. Many more people say they "saw the band live" than actually exist in the state of New Jersey. (*)
The year is 1975, ancient history, but well past the age of dinosaurs. Mad Fables never had a hit on a commercial radio station, but forty years after their start, they seem to have gathered some steam.
The legacy is their fans. And these are the tales and songs...
In the world of the programming nerds, there is an expression, Yet Another , which people apply to their software name. In doing so they acknowledge that theirs is a redundancy in a progression of developments. But, they hope that their new perspective is preferred to the older software/experience, hence the 'Yet Another'.
Announcements, and rumors, this month say that all major label distribution houses will "no longer make CDs". It is the signal of the starting demise of the plastic CD format.
I already lament the repercussions of this decision. The musical collection format which has been called album is not going to prevail. The packaging standards of the vinyl period are ending. It forced artists to publish collections of music that could fill up a grooved recording. In doing so, it inspired Sgt. Pepper's, Tommy, Aqualung, most of the works by the Moody Blues, Genesis and Yes, and even the Grateful Dead's Workingman's Dead -- they all were artistically conceived as a collection.
Online download centers of the Itune mold say "Its one song at a time, folks!" There is no opportunity for the artist to introduce other sound palettes. They have banished the musical package idea to the same realm as the community listening opportunity. When was the last time you listened to music with friends?

(*) - For the record, this is not true and is totally fabricated, but it sounds pretty sweet. The largest crowd was 12000 at Kutztown Festival.
